Everest Three Passes Trek

Three Passes is the most complete high route in the Khumbu and links major valleys by crossing Renjo La, Cho La, and Kongma La. This trek demands strong fitness and careful acclimatization, but delivers unmatched variety from remote villages to major base camp viewpoints.

Everest Three Passes Trek itinerary

Each day is structured for a steady pace, strong acclimatization, and memorable moments on trail.

  1. Day 1

    Fly Kathmandu to Lukla, trek to Phakding

    2,610 m

    Begin in the lower Khumbu with a short approach day.

  2. Day 2

    Trek Phakding to Namche Bazaar

    3,440 m

    Major ascent day into Namche.

  3. Day 3

    Acclimatization day in Namche

    3,880 m

    Active acclimatization before entering higher passes itinerary.

  4. Day 4

    Trek Namche to Thame

    3,820 m

    Move into the quieter western Khumbu route toward Renjo La approach.

  5. Day 5

    Trek Thame to Lungden

    4,380 m

    Gain altitude steadily in remote high-valley terrain.

  6. Day 6

    Cross Renjo La, descend to Gokyo

    5,360 m

    First pass crossing with dramatic Himalayan panorama and descent to Gokyo.

  7. Day 7

    Acclimatization at Gokyo

    Optional Gokyo Ri hike and glacier basin views.

  8. Day 8

    Trek Gokyo to Thagnak

    Short positioning day before Cho La crossing.

  9. Day 9

    Cross Cho La to Dzongla

    Technically demanding pass day over rocky and possibly icy terrain.

    Trek Dzongla to Lobuche

    Traverse to upper Khumbu main trail and rest before EBC section.

  11. Day 11

    Trek Lobuche to Gorakshep and EBC

    Reach Everest Base Camp and return to Gorakshep.

  12. Day 12

    Early morning Kala Patthar sunrise, trek back to Lobuche

    Pre-dawn climb for Everest sunrise views, then descend and return to Lobuche to recover before Kongma La.

  13. Day 13

    Trek Lobuche to Chhukung via Kongma La

    5,535 m

    Cross Kongma La, the highest of the three passes, on a demanding high-alpine traverse to Chhukung.

  14. Day 14

    Trek Chhukung to Tengboche

    3,867 m

    Long descent through Dingboche and Pangboche to the monastery ridge at Tengboche.

  15. Day 15

    Trek Tengboche to Monjo

    2,835 m

    Continue descending through Namche and down the Dudh Koshi valley to lower-elevation Monjo.

  16. Day 16

    Trek Monjo to Lukla

    2,860 m

    Final trekking day with a gentle rise back to Lukla for your last mountain overnight.

  17. Day 17

    Fly Lukla to Kathmandu

    1,400 m

    Morning mountain flight back to Kathmandu and trek completion.
